My Parachute (Flash Fiction)

A big thank you goes to Priceless Joy for hosting Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers, and another thank you goes to Sunayana (with MoiPensieve) for providing the inspiring photo prompt this week. If you haven’t heard of or joined this challenge, please check out the link and PJ’s blog for more details and entertaining entries. You won’t regret it. Oh! And…

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! Love for our significant others, families, friends, and ourselves.

~*~

Now, to the story:

~*~

His love came with socks left on the floor and late-night Espresso runs.

His love was my forgotten name tag waiting in strong fingers when I rushed back home to get it. Again.

His love knew nothing about K-Pop. But everything about dancing under the stars to slow songs.

His love flickered, shrunk, and grew like candle flames.

His love walked too loud and didn’t always say what I wanted or needed to hear.

His love called me out, even when my pride straddled my tongue.

His love was harsh words and cold shoulders reaching frostbite level.

His love stayed, even though it probably shouldn’t have.

His love believed in me, in us.

His love was sorry carved into peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches.

His love called me beautiful when I cried my eyes out—yet again—for Titanic.

His love admired how deeply I could feel for fictional characters.

His love aged. Became gray. A little rounder.

And when, or if, his love leaves me first, I’ll say thank you, I love you, forever and always.
