Use reading to better understand your genre and themes. I’d be surprised if you haven’t heard this before. The saying branches off another: What we learn, we can use.
Last week, I wrote about Word Count to get a better sense of how my manuscript, complete at 55K, compares to other books that touch on similar subjects and themes:
- Psychological suspense
- Accidental kidnappings
- Contemporary realistic fiction
- Strong family dynamics
One of the books listed was Girl, Stolen (April Henry). I’ll include the blurb below. But before we get to that, you should know this week’s topic is MUSIC. Not just any ol’ music, but songs that fit the current book you’re reading or writing.
Feel free to comment below or
create a new post that’s linked back to mine.
I don’t know about you, but I usually have a few songs in mind as I write, read, and reflect on characters — mine or others. The same thing happened for April’s suspenseful story (I’d give this worthwhile read a solid B+). I’ll write a review later this week.
Sixteen-year-old Cheyenne Wilder, sick with pneumonia, stays in the car to sleep while her stepmom goes into the pharmacy. When the car starts back up, she knows the person behind the wheel isn’t her stepmom. Cheyenne might be blind, but she smells cigarettes — and the person’s breathing too fast, too harsh.
Griffin only meant to jack the car, not kidnap a girl. But once the evening news spews out that Cheyenne’s father is the president of a powerful corporation, there’s a reason to keep her. Or so says his own father.
If you haven’t already read this book, it’s $7.09 on kindle, $9.18 paperback, $14.14 hardback, and $11.95 audio.

1. Echo — Jason Walker
Hello, hello
Anybody out there?
‘Cause I don’t hear a soundAlone, alone
I don’t really know where the world is but I miss it nowI’m out on the edge and I’m screaming my name
Like a fool at the top of my lungs
Sometimes when I close my eyes I pretend I’m alright
But it’s never enough
2. I Need a Doctor — Dr. Dre ft. Eminem and Skylar Grey
I’m about to lose my mind
You’ve been gone for so long, I’m runnin’ outta time
I need a doctor, call me a doctor
I need a doctor, doctor to bring me back to life
3. Numb — Linkin Park
I’m tired of being what you want me to be
Feeling so faithless, lost under the surface
Don’t know what you’re expecting of me
Put under the pressure of walking in your shoes
(Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
(Caught in the undertow, just caught in the undertow)
4. Smooth Criminal — Michael Jackson
Annie, are you OK?
Will you tell us that you’re OK?
There’s a sign in the window
That he struck you a crescendo, Annie
He came into your apartment
He left the bloodstains on the carpet
Then you ran into the bedroom
You were struck down
It was your doom
5. Luxurious — Gwen Stefani ft. Slim Thug
Working so hard every night and day
And now we get the pay back
Trying so hard saving up the paper
Now we get to lay back
6. Bohemian Rhapsody — Queen
Too late, my time has come,
Sent shivers down my spine,
Body’s aching all the time.
Goodbye, everybody, I’ve got to go,
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.
7. Dollhouse — Melanie Martinez
No one ever listens, this wallpaper glistens
Don’t let them see what goes down in the kitchen.Places, places, get in your places
Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces.
Everyone thinks that we’re perfect
Please don’t let them look through the curtains.
8. My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark — Fall Out Boy
Be careful making wishes in the dark (dark)
Can’t be sure when they’ve hit their mark (mark)
And besides in the mean, mean time
I’m just dreaming of tearing you apart
9. Titanium — David Guetta ft. Sia
You shout it out,
But I can’t hear a word you say
I’m talking loud not saying much
I’m criticized but all your bullets ricochet
You shoot me down, but I get up
10. Animal I Have Become — Three Days Grace
So what if you can see the darkest side of me?
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it’s not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal
(This animal, this animal)
11. Mad World — Gary Jules
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it’s a very, very
Mad world, mad world

❤ Are you going to play music for your little muffin while he or she is still in the oven? 😀 If yes, what kind of music?

Girl, Stolen sounds like a good read. Have you read it? Love all the Queen songs.

I have 😀 I’m trying to read and analyze as many YA psych suspense novels as I can since that’s the genre my manuscript fits in (especially stories that deal with kidnappings).
