Loving You Is . . . (One Word Photo Challenge)

This photo-prompted flash fiction is in response to Jennifer Nichole Well’s One Word Photo Challenge

She wrapped the red towel around her glowing skin. Her reflection stared back in the mirror edged with steam. She ran a finger across the smile that’d been playing on her brown and pink lips all day.

EarringsShe hummed and glided into her sunkissed room. The light melon-colored dress and earrings she’d picked out earlier complemented her bed’s orange and cream duvet cover. She glanced at the green numbers on her cable box clock. 6:25! He was going to be here in five minutes — if that.

The doorbell rang downstairs.

A fluttering sensation erupted in her stomach. She rushed into her clothes and giggled. He should’ve known she wouldn’t be ready on time. She put on some black eyeliner and a teasing shade of lipstick. Grinning at her reflection, she tossed her brown hair over her shoulder.

She turned to leave, but then frowned and looked back to the mirror. Her lipstick wasn’t vibrant. It was gray. Her melon-colored dress was gray. Her hair, skin, the walls . . . all gray.

The bell rang again. Fists pounded on the door.

She fell to the gray tiles and gripped the skin over her shattering heart. Sobs wracked through her body.

  1. A very colourful story. Loved it. At first I thought it was in response to the flash fiction (grey mansion) but then realised you’d posted this story before the picture came out. Just had a look at the One Word Photo Challenge. Looks interesting.

    • Thanks! I wanted to include as much color to bring out the contrast when her world falls into gray. Better yet, when she realizes her world is no longer “in color.”

If you feel up to it, you should definitely join. Another outlet to express your creativity, life, and vision.
