How far would you go to bring more authenticity to your characters and plot?
Would you starve yourself? Overeat?
Get a job that your character has (even if it’s scrubbing toilets)? Learn boxing or how to dance a specific style?
Sit in a public area and commit voyeurism? Devour books? Steal identities? Clone people?
Force yourself to be angry everyday and do everything in your power to push your loved ones away? Use them like subjects to an experiment?
Pretend to be pregnant and not tell anyone but God (and maybe your pet) the truth?
Would you hit your grandma?
Give up everything — your significant other, family, house, car, money, clothes other than the ones on you, whatever — to understand the complexity of homelessness?
Would you dress, speak, walk, move, or eat in a foreign way that matches your character’s voice and personality for as long as it takes to get to the final draft?
Would you change the kind of music you listen to? Cheat on your significant other? Get involved with drugs and shoplifting? Crash a car? Go to rehab? Jump off a cliff?
AGAIN I ask, how far would you go to gain more understanding of your characters and the unique paths they’re traveling on (by force or otherwise)?
